The model integrates country-level antibiotic consumption, a global compilation of wastewater treatment plants and their discharges, and measured pharmaceutical concentrations used for validation. Transport in the river system is estimated with the contaminant fate module in the 500-metre global river routing model HydroROUT.
The predictions can help identify areas where field studies should focus, support screening methods for guidelines and regulations, and inform treatment standards for individual wastewater plants.
