The model was applied to China and includes a consumption and release module based on county-level population demographics, point sources from 2,547 wastewater treatment plants and unconnected rural and urban populations. It estimates in-stream concentrations for estrone, 17β-estradiol, estriol and 17α-ethinylestradiol.
Under a baseline scenario, eco-toxicological risk was found in 23.6% of analysed rivers with an average flow above 0.1 m³/s, with about 4% showing a risk ten times or more above the predicted no-effect concentration.
